I do consult this book before a big grocery trip to make a meal plan and see what extra ingredients I may need. Each recipe has a description before it saying why she came up with it or what she pairs it with or why its one of her family's favorites. The majority of her ingredients are baisc and easy to find, and she keeps the ingredient list short. I would highly recommend this book to any family that loves to eat and try new things but doesn't have a ton of time to be in the kitchen. I love how thoroughly she explains how to divide and freeze half the meal for another date or morph your roast into amazing au jus sandwiches or your salmon into a creamy chowder or your pork roast into wonton soup. As a very busy (who isn't). mom to two toddlers and my husband often deployed or away for military duties I am in love with this cookbook. Now I always have a plan to "morph" leftovers into something else delicious or save half the meal for another night.
If you have a well stocked pantry or read up on her list of recommended items you can easily start cooking her meals right away. If you look at my cookbook now it seems every other page is dog-eared as a favorite or a "want to try.". Nutrition is important to me and it is to her too. Would make a great gift for any busy mom who likes to cook for her family. She is very personable and easy to read. I have done so many recipes from here all ready and loved them all, even my kids 2 & 4 have loved them. Basically she's a mom who cares about her family and wants to put a quick but fun & tasty meal on the table every night. It absolutely will help you out in the kitchen.
I'm also very happy that she makes healthy choices like "reduced sodium" broths and evaporated milk in place of heavy cream. We tried Wonton Soup tonight and Brown Sugar-Glazed Pineapples w/ Toasted Coconut, both were a big hit. Since I typically only cook for three I used to have too many leftovers and would never eat them all. I would consider her recipes adventurous but still pleasing to younger family members.
The recipe book is great gave a lot of recipes you can use simple and fast and they were good.
I try other recipes from other cookbooks and they just don't compare to the flavor and easiness. I love this cookbook and use it every day of the week.
The recipes are easy, quick, and lots of times, I don't have to go out shopping because Robin uses items that most well-stocked pantries and refrigerators already have. I have tons of cook books and this is one of my favorites.
I make Sesame Chicken with Garlicky Broccoli, Hoisin Beef with Vegetables and Ponzu Chicken with Vegetables on a regular basis. I enjoy Robin's Miller's approach to weeknight meals - prepping ahead, preparing extra ingredients to jump start the next night's meal, morphing one dish into something else so your kids don't complain about left overs. This book is a keeper. Who needs Chinese takeout. It's practical, time-saving and feasible. This cookbook is one of my favorites, especially the asian-inspired dishes.
